Univers Passport: The Digital Brand Passport for Authentication, Provenance, and Resale Control

A luxury object should carry its own identity: proof of what it is, where it came from, and who has owned it. Univers Passport is a sovereign digital passport for physical goods that ends counterfeits and gives brands control of their own resale market.

A luxury object tells a story, but it has never been able to prove it. A bag, a watch, a piece of jewellery carries its craft in its materials and its value in its name, yet the moment it leaves the boutique it becomes anonymous. There is no reliable way to prove it is authentic, no record of where it came from, no account of who has owned it, and no way for the house that made it to have any relationship with it ever again. The object enters a grey world of authentication by educated guess, resale by uncontrolled third parties, and counterfeits that are increasingly indistinguishable from the real thing.

Univers Passport closes that world. It is a sovereign digital passport for a physical object: a permanent, cryptographically verified identity that travels with the product for its entire life, covering what it is, where it came from, and who has owned it. Every eligible object receives its own passport, and that passport does for the object what a real passport does for a person. It makes identity provable.

Three forms, one identity

Univers Passport exists as three connected experiences, each meeting the owner where they are.

The everyday form is a wallet pass, living in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet beside the boarding passes and tickets, glanceable and quiet, showing the object's identity and its current verified status. It updates itself automatically: if authenticity is re-confirmed or ownership changes, the pass reflects it with no action from the owner.

The full form is a three-dimensional portal that renders the passport as a physical object in its own right, a leather-bound document opened flat in space, with real material weight, boutique lighting, and pages that behave like pages. One side tells the object's provenance: where and when it was made, by whose hand, from what materials, with the making story the house chooses to tell. The other side holds its ownership and authenticity: the current custodian, the preserved history of everyone before them, and a living seal that is the emotional centre of the whole experience. The seal is rendered in real time and reflects the passport's true cryptographic state, sealed and gently alive when the object is verified, breaking and reforming during a transfer of ownership. It is the difference between a database entry and a ritual object. And because it runs in the browser, the portal opens from a link on any device, with no app required, with a beautifully designed flat version served automatically where full 3D is not viable.

The anchoring form is physical. A secure chip is embedded discreetly in the object at manufacture, cryptographically paired to that specific passport. Tapping a phone against the object runs a challenge-and-response check and returns a verdict in about two seconds: valid, opening into the full portal, or flagged, with no ambiguity. This is the form that gives the passport teeth.

The end of the counterfeit

The counterfeit economy survives on one fact: that a fake, made well enough, cannot be told from the real object by looking. Univers Passport removes that fact. Authenticity stops being a matter of expert opinion and becomes a matter of cryptographic proof. The chip in the genuine object is paired to its passport through signing infrastructure that a counterfeiter cannot reproduce, because the pairing cannot be forged without keys that never leave secure hardware. A fake object cannot produce a valid response. It is not that the counterfeit is caught by a sharper eye. It is that the counterfeit can no longer answer the question the object is now able to be asked.

For a house whose name is its most valuable asset, this is the first mechanism that makes authenticity a property of the object itself rather than a service performed on it after the fact.

The resale market, reclaimed

There is a second transformation, and commercially it may be the larger one. Today, when a luxury object is resold, the house that made it is entirely absent. It has no visibility into the transaction, no ability to verify it, no relationship with the new owner, and no participation in a secondary market that, for many categories, now rivals the primary one in size. The brand created all the value and is a spectator to its second life.

Univers Passport makes ownership transfer a governed event rather than an anonymous handoff. A transfer is a ceremony, not a form: both parties consent through a two-key handshake, the prior chapter of ownership is archived and permanently preserved rather than erased, the seal performs its reseal, and both owners' passes update. Because the transfer flows through the passport, the house is present in it for the first time: able to verify the object, to recognise the new owner, and to participate in and set the terms of its own secondary market rather than being cut out of it. Resale stops being the place where the brand relationship dies and becomes the place where it continues.

Why it is real, not a badge

Digital certificates of authenticity have existed and largely failed, because they asked the buyer to trust an organisation's word. Univers Passport asks no one to trust anything, because its guarantees rest on verifiable cryptography rather than reputation. Every issuance and every transfer is signed with keys held in secure hardware that never expose them. The record is append-only and hash-chained, so any retroactive tampering is mathematically detectable rather than merely discouraged. Every entry carries an independent, verifiable timestamp. Owners authenticate through device-based passkeys, not passwords, closing off an entire category of account theft. None of this machinery is visible in daily use. The owner simply experiences a passport that feels as considered as the object it represents. The cryptography is the invisible foundation beneath the visible ritual, which is exactly where it belongs.

Sovereign by design

Univers Passport is a digital brand passport built on the same conviction as everything Univers makes: that the identity, the data, and the control belong to the party they are about, not to a platform in the middle. The house owns its objects' identities. The owner owns their custody. The record is verifiable by anyone and forgeable by no one. In an era where the European Digital Product Passport is moving from ambition to obligation, Univers Passport is the version built to a luxury standard, where authentication, provenance, and resale are not compliance checkboxes but a continuation of the object's dignity into its digital life.

The object could always tell its story. Now, for the first time, it can prove it.
